John R. Sparks, Jr. is Of Counsel with the firm. His roles include the management and oversight of the firm’s quality programs, training of the firm’s associates, and business development.
Mr. Sparks speaks nationally on issues concerning litigation management and the “New Normal” in file handling. He is a frequent speaker at Claims Litigation Management (CLM) conferences and has also spoken at the Defense Research Institutes (DRI) Managing Partner Conference, the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) Litigation Conference and The Gavel’s National Conference, among others. Mr. Sparks is a member of a national think tank dealing with case resolution strategies and the application of project management and process improvement concepts to law firms. In recognition for his work with the aforementioned think tank, he has been recognized for Value Innovation and Strategic Partnership. Mr. Sparks was also awarded the 2017 Blue Ocean MVP by the Westfield Insurance Group.
Mr. Sparks oversees a broad range of activities related to the firm’s quality programs. He collects and analyzes data from closed files to assure that the firm maintains an aggressive posture directed at minimizing the total case cost to the client. He regularly meets with file handlers and reviews cases at pre-determined intervals, emphasizing the need to establish and follow an aggressive and case specific litigation plan. This file review work is done without charge to our clients. He oversees the firm’s compliance with client and internal guidelines, and to assure that each billing entry adds value to the file. He meets with clients to review closed-file data and discuss firm performance. Mr. Sparks also serves as a resource for all firm lawyers on issues such as resolution strategies, trial tactics and cost efficient file management.
Mr. Sparks spent the first 33 years of his legal career with a large, regional defense firm, where he tried over 70 cases to verdict, primarily on behalf of medical malpractice defendants. Many of the cases involved catastrophic injuries. He also tried a number of significant casualty cases. Mr. Sparks served in a number of management positions at his prior firm, including as co-managing partner of the firm. He was the first managing partner of the firm’s Lancaster office. He also led the firm’s quality assurance initiative. His work in that role included development and implementation of department-based best practices, development of “total case cost” metrics for firm and client use and oversight of the firm’s billing compliance program.
Mr. Sparks is a former Chair of the American Bar Association’s Committee on Sports Law, and has spoken nationally on medical negligence and risk avoidance in school sports programs. He is a past winner of The Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Short Story Fiction Writing contest. He is a long standing quasi-fanatical follower of Villanova basketball.
